The Larchmont Buzz’s PICK OF THE WEEK – COMEDY

The Amazing Sex Life of Rabbits

“When it comes to The Amazing Sex Life of Rabbits, Shakespeare said it best: “The play’s the thing!” “Comedic theater” is an understatement for playwright Michael Shaw Fisher’s rich subject, characters and production aesthetics. This play serves up a bevy of personality with a side dish of aphrodisia-infused banter.

As the four players come together, the dynamics of the two married couples come to life. Bobby and Elise are stable, yet financially underwhelming. Bobby’s ex-wife Danielle and her extremely wealthy husband Carson have a penchant for tumult. The couples discuss procreation and the struggle within.

What unfolds is an over-the-top request à la Indecent Proposal (with Shaw throwing in a dash of dadaism). Reason is out the window. Money-for-sex is on the menu. And the result is a “hare” raising hour of what makes the fringe so gosh darn amazing!

Credit for stellar writing and direction goes to Fisher, who offers belly laughs a-plenty while also throwing in some deeper thoughts about the nature of money, relationships present and past and what it means to “rise to the challenge.”

This four actors are collectively stars. Richardson Cisneros-Jones is a scene-stealing machine of pure talent. Leigh Wulff gives a cool and hysterical portrayal of the infertile Elise. While she is set up to be the straight character, when she starts to cut loose (literally), she stands out!”

The Look Club says,

“This show is clever, funny, honest and, most impressively, not at all what I feared it could have been. “Yelly plays” have been a hot trend on Broadway for awhile now. They usually involving multiple couples having dinner, family gatherings that surface feuds and other group situations—vacations, engagement parties—that get out of hand. In all of them, yelling ensues. And in many of them relationships end up broken.

But while the conflict in “The Amazing Sex Life of Rabbits” gets out of hand and certainly escalates to what some might call insanity, it never escalates to yelling. The situation is often uncomfortable, but remarkably, never for the audience.

Speaking of audience… the amount of laughing out loud we all did was incredibly impressive. The laughs were pervasive, not single chuckles. And they were earned. This play doesn’t lean on easy reference jokes or other low hanging fruit. It doesn’t need to.

“The Amazing Sex Life of Rabbits” leans on smart character-driven comedy for its humor, and perhaps most importantly, it shows that even in insane situations and under great adversity, love can prevail and relationships can survive. We need much more work like this in the world.”
